Election Series Review: General Board Candidate Ted Thomas

Bishop Ted Thomas is a 2012 candidate for COGIC’s General Board. Thomas, who presides over Virginia First Jurisdiction, has an impressive election website. Arguably, the best website of any of the candidates. But will a good website win him any votes to the denomination’s high office?

Thomas’ platform as defined by his election website, seems to be summed up by one of  his oft repeated message points: “Its time to pass the mantle”.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t identify who is currently holding “the mantle” he wants passed to him, nor does he say what he plans to do with the mantle should it be passed to him. The message seems to be ill conceived. Elections are not about mantle passing, but votes. In that regard, Thomas’ message may be all but ignored by delegates.

Thomas has held offices in the national spectrum that lift his profile somewhat, but those offices are barely defined and have little relevance to the general constituency other than a title of importance. Thomas also strongly believes “leadership is more than just a title”, but is that directed at any of his competitors for the General Board?

Perhaps his best qualification is that he has no known sexual or leadership scandals attached to his name. COGIC leadership is desperately in need of such men at this time.

Although he touts his “experienced voice and [which will bring]  real solutions to the challenges facing the Church Of God In Christ today”, he fails to identify any of the challenges.

Neither Thomas nor his election officials responded to our General Board Election questionnaire which would have given him a greater opportunity to address real issues facing the church he seeks to lead.

Per his election website Bishop Thomas outlines his core message thusly:

Leadership is more than a title. Far too often, people go in search of a title without first having the record of experience needed to carry out the responsibilities. As a result, families, churches and communities are left with poor leaders and poor guidance on how to live victoriously.

It’s time to pass the mantle. Too many of our leaders have disqualified themselves. They have refused to live up to righteous standards and have replaced biblical truths with a watered down version – hoping to win passing fame and popularity.

Leadership is more than a title. Our Church is in need of godly leaders who have insight on what it takes inspire a body of believers to live holy. We need leaders who can grow a church ministry to work effectively for the kingdom of God.

It’s time to pass the mantle. Our Church is in need of godly leaders who can help usher in a spirit of sanctification and holy living. We need leaders who have proven to be vessels that the Lord can use effectively in ministry.

Leadership is more than a title. Bishop Thomas’ record demonstrates that he is more than just a title. He is a man that has worked as a co-laborer within his community and has continued to produce lasting results in the Church Of God In Christ.

It’s time to pass the mantle. Bishop Thomas’ love for the Church Of God In Christ, his commitment to upholding its doctrine and his demonstrated support of leadership proves that he is able to shoulder this awesome responsibility.
